About

About the Cleveland County Arts Council

The Cleveland County Arts Council was founded in 1986 and officially chartered in 1987 as a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering creativity, education, and community through the arts. What began as a grassroots effort to unite local arts groups has grown into a vibrant cultural hub serving thousands across Cleveland County.

Our home—the historic post office on the square in Uptown Shelby—has become a place where creativity thrives. Kids play here, learn here, and laugh here. Adults rediscover their creativity, explore new skills, and share inspiration. It’s a place to connect, reflect, and dream.

Each year, the Arts Council directly reaches more than 21,000 people. Over 10,000 visitors come through our doors to experience exhibits, performances, and classes. Through our outreach programs, more than 13,000 students enjoy cultural performances in schools, hundreds attend summer art camp, and hundreds more participate in our student art competitions.

As the umbrella organization for 22 affiliate groups, we provide support, promotion, and resources to artists and organizations throughout the county. We’re proud to be part of a statewide and regional network supported by the North Carolina Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Arts & Science Council of Charlotte-Mecklenburg.
